Rich Black is the New Black

Rich Black is the New Black

In process color printing, the color black provides important outline information and shadow definition to the 4 color images. Typically the gray scale of black in a halftones ranges from 1% to 100%.

Print projects designed with larger areas of solid black need design intervention so that these 4 color images running on the same side of the sheet don't become over saturated. For this reason, the other process colors; cyan, magenta and yellow, run underneath the black in various screen combinations to create an optimal black solid coverage. The ink coverage on the sheet makes for a very dense black solid area while using very little actual black ink.

Different printers have different levels of solid black screen combinations, so please contact us about your particular project. We will advise on the best build for the solid black areas in your files.
